I honestly thought my life was just going to keep revolving around dead-end jobs. I was working, but it didn’t feel like I was moving forward. It felt like people weren’t willing to give me a chance, like I had something to offer, but no real way to prove it or get in the door.
When I started this program, I realized I wasn’t starting from zero. I already had knowledgeable skills. But what I didn’t have was refinement, direction, and confidence in how to translate what I knew into a real career path. This program helped me fine-tune those skills, and that changed everything. Now I feel prepared, not just to get a job, but to have a career, a successful career, in any field that I choose.
One of the biggest differences for me has been access. It’s one thing to say you’re capable; it’s another thing to have people who can actually vouch for you, guide you, and connect you to opportunities. By my skills being fine-tuned and the connections that I’ve made through this program, it’s easier for me to get my foot in the door and to showcase my actual skills. I didn’t just learn; I built relationships that I can carry into the workforce.
A turning point for me was being exposed to the trades in a real way. Because of this program I really know that being an electrician or a carpenter would be a great fit for me. They showed us, they actually took us to the sites, and it let me see what I would really be doing day to day. That hands-on exposure made it feel real, not just like an idea.
And there were changes I didn’t expect. One unexpected benefit for me was learning to be on time, because I’m a late person. I started showing up 15 minutes early, and that gave me time to get settled and prepare for the day. It seems small, but for me it was a big shift, proof that I could build new habits and show up differently for myself.
The most memorable moments were the site visits and being with my cohort. We pushed each other to complete the tasks that the union reps gave us. It wasn’t competitive; it was supportive. It was just like a family. I didn’t feel like I was doing this alone.
Now, on the other side of the program, I can say this: I have different connections, and I know I’m valuable. I don’t feel stuck anymore. I feel like I have options, and I have a direction. This program didn’t just help me learn. It helped me believe that I belong in the workforce and that I can build something lasting.
